Julia Fiona Roberts was born in Atlanta on the 28th of October, 1967 as the daughter of Betty Lou Bredemus and Walter Grady Roberts. Her grandfather, her great-grandfather John Pendleton Roberts, a farmer was one of the first Roberts to arrive in Atlanta. Her father's passion for theatre was inherited by her. in theater from a young time. As a student in Emory University in 1952 he performed in shows on campus and in Atlanta. In 1953, he joined the Air Force and while stationed in Biloxi in Mississippi, he acted in a show that he performed in with Betty Lou Bredemus. They got married in 2005, and welcomed their first child, Eric Anthony in 1956. Walter went to Tulane University at New Orleans in the year 1957, after they had separated from the Air Force of the United States. In 1960, the family relocated from Louisiana to Decatur Georgia where Walter began working at Atlanta's Academy Theater and the Harrington Scenic and Lighting Studio. Walter as well as Betty Lou financed their own production of a children's Sunday matinee show called Bum Bum and His Buddies. They established an Actors and Writers Workshop in the same year, which was in operation for a period of about six years. They were joined by Lelisa Billingsley (also known as Lisa) as well as Julia (also known as Julie) at the time.
