Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian is a Canadian-American feminist media critic and public speaker. Feminist Frequency is a site which hosts video and commentary analysing portrayals gender roles in pop culture. Anita Sarkeesian has been a media critic, blogger and award-winning feminist for nearly 10 years. She is the creator and director of executive for Feminist Frequency which is an education not-for-profit website which explores representations of women in pop stories of culture. Committed to destroying the stereotypes related to women in popular media, she is also working with issues that relate to the gender-specific harassment of women as well as different classes of individuals on the internet. Sarkeesian is a graduate in social and political thinking from York University. As a public speaker, she is well-known and has given talks at TEDxWomen XOXO and United Nations Broadband Working Group. When she was a student at the university Sarkeesian was concerned about issues related to gender and rights for women at an early stage. A woman with ambitions to start a web-series examining the gender-based representation in video games was targeted by the internet campaign. The incident did not deter her, rather it strengthened the determination of a feminist critic of media. The award-winning journalist has received numerous accolades in recognition of her many prominent contributions to the field of feministism. Anita Sarkeesian was a multi-award winner for her work as a media critic. She also serves as the creator and director of Feminist Frequency an educational and non-profit organization that explores pop culture representations of females.
